ABOUT

The Campus Bicycle Center is a collaboration between The Bike Project of Urbana-Champaign (TBP) and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and is dedicated to empowering individuals with knowledge about how to repair and maintain bicycles.

Since opening in 2010 through a grant from the Student Sustainability Committee, the Campus Bicycle Center continues its mission of teaching bicycle maintenance, providing access to affordable equipment, and supporting overall safety education. Read about ongoing collaborative projects.

The Campus Bicycle Center is a hands-on, educational space meant to provide knowledge and experience about fixing bicycles, not a “drop it off for repair” bike shop. The shop provides tools, parts, refurbished bikes for sale, educational classes, and dedicated volunteers to help shop members and the larger community with their bicycle needs.

If you would like to use the space to repair your bike you must follow the Center’s rules including signing into the sign-in computer, paying for parts, doing the repair yourself, cleaning up after yourself, and respecting the staff.

Membership

Membership in The Bike Project at Urbana-Champaign is valid at both the Campus Bicycle Center and the Downtown Urbana Shop.

Free visit?!?!?!  (note: usually not available at CBC during the busy 2 – 3  months starting in late August) Your first bike repair visit to The Bike Project/Campus Bike Center is free to use the space for a single minor repair(you still have to pay for parts)– if you want to use our shop more, you must become a member. During your first visit, the first thing you will do is create a login at our sign-in guest book. After that, you can get a tour of our shop, see what kinds of tools or bikes we have available, and ask any questions you may have about our mission, procedures, or anything in general. We will also allow you to use the space to perform a single minor repair — figure no more than 30 minutes of stand time. Some repairs will need a replacement part. You can supply your own, or buy a used or new part at the shop.

How do repairs work?

You can work on your own bike with professional repair stands and tools we have in our space.  Volunteers and staff will be able to offer advice, but won’t be able to cover every step or complete repairs for you.  We cannot offer storage for personal bikes in Campus Bike Center so be ready to take your bike home with you.  Our spaces are open to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. We have several repair stations and toolsets.  Our capacity is 8 people repairing bikes at a time.  You must use a repair station when repairing your bike.  Working on the ground is not allowed.  Taking tools outside is not allowed.  Learning is required, and having fun is highly encouraged!
